Empowering youth: Teachers’ mission

Speaker: Lidija Kralj, Senior Analyst, EduconLK The central message of the presentation is that empowering youth begins with empowering teachers. By fostering well-being, inclusiveness, social-emotional learning, student leadership, collaboration, and innovative teaching practices, educators can help young people discover their strengths and develop the skills needed for the future. Ultimately, the mission of teachers is not only to teach knowledge but also to help every student discover their own "superpower".

Key Messages

Teachers were central during the pandemic The sudden transition to distance learning in March 2020 highlighted the crucial role of teachers. Educators had to support students, adapt to new technologies, collaborate with colleagues, and maintain students' motivation and well-being in challenging circumstances. Well-being and social-emotional learning are essential One of the strongest lessons from the pandemic was that learning depends on students' emotional and social well-being. Building relationships, providing support, and fostering a sense of belonging are fundamental to successful education. The presentation emphasizes social and emotional learning as a core competence for both students and teachers. Teachers create empowering environments Students learn best when they feel safe, valued, and supported. Teachers have a responsibility to create environments where young people can develop confidence, participate actively, and take ownership of their learning. Empowerment includes allowing both students and teachers to make mistakes and learn from them. Student agency and peer learning matter The presentation introduces "Method 270°," an approach in which students create educational content, present it to classmates, and publish their work online. This encourages independence, responsibility, creativity, and peer-to-peer learning. The idea is that students become active contributors rather than passive recipients of knowledge. Peer support develops important life skills Peer-learning and peer-support initiatives can strengthen school culture and help students build:
  • Self-awareness
  • Self-management
  • Social awareness
  • Relationship skills
  • Responsible decision-making
  • Confidence and empathy
Education should be inclusive Empowering youth means ensuring opportunities for all learners, regardless of background, ability, or location. International projects, learning communities, and collaborative initiatives help broaden students' horizons and create more inclusive educational experiences. Teaching is the art of empowerment The speaker argues that modern pedagogy is increasingly moving toward collaborative learning, project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, formative assessment, personalisation, and student-centred approaches. These methods help learners become more engaged and empowered. Teachers also need empowerment Teachers face challenges in developing new competencies, particularly in areas such as AI-enabled education. Lack of training, time, resources, and awareness can be barriers. Supporting teachers through professional development and recognising their expertise is essential. Blended learning is part of the future Online learning is "here to stay". Rather than replacing schools, digital environments can complement traditional learning and improve accessibility, flexibility, and inclusion. Well-designed blended learning can benefit diverse groups of learners and strengthen educational resilience. Community, collaboration, and lifelong learning The presentation calls for stronger collaboration among schools, families, communities, and international networks. Initiatives such as Erasmus+, eTwinning, Teacher Academies, and Centres of Vocational Excellence provide opportunities for innovation and sharing good practice. Watch the keynote speech
